Why impact investing:

JCF recognizes that there are potential projects and programs in our community which would make a positive impact on residents, but where a grant is not the right tool to fund the project. Additionally, there are projects and organizations in our community that may struggle to secure capital from traditional sources, like banks, for a variety of different reasons. Impact investments by JCF are meant to fill capital gaps when projects that will benefit Jackson residents require additional capital and traditional sources of financing may be out of reach. These investments expand the possibilities for how we can use our growing endowment to support Jackson County residents.

What is impact investing:

Impact investing is an additional way in which the Jackson Community Foundation (JCF) can support important projects and organizations throughout Jackson County. Existing between our grant and scholarship programs and financial investments that support the growth of our endowment, impact investments take money that has historically been invested in the stock market and invest those dollars in local projects and organizations instead. These investments are designed to create a positive social impact for residents in Jackson County while also pursuing a financial return to support and grow foundation initiatives in the long run.

Basic Criteria:

While each impact investment that JCF makes will be different depending on the project, there are a few basic criteria all investment opportunities should follow:

  1. Located within Jackson County.

  2. Demonstrated alignment with JCF’s Vision, Mission, and Values. Extra credit if the project directly addresses a priority in the Drive Jackson plan and/or the Jackson Collaborative Network’s Shared Measurement Framework.

  3. Demonstrated plan for how and when the funds will be paid back, including a return on the investment. Unlike grants, impact investments are expected to be repaid so that funds can be recycled and used for future projects.
